Hi everybody!
Today we will analyze the most common mistake when choosing a lampshade – the size.
The easiest situation is when we already have a set and just want to replace the lampshade. Then we simply loof for the same size or something very similar Easy, right? Easy.
But what should we do when we have a base and need to match a lampshade?
First of all, we need to answer the question: where is this lamp going to stand? As you can see in the picture, the same size shade looks completely different depending on the height. If we are going to place it low (f.ex. on the night table), the shade should be a bit smaller. Otherwise, it will be the first thing we notice, covering the nice base. For higher surfaces we can choose a larger lampshade.

For small lamps, such as table lamps, we can compare the bottom diameter of the shade with base of thelamp (without the bulb holder). More or less, they should be the same size. For slimmer and taller lamps, this won’t work- in the case, then shade should be slightly smaller to keep a light and balanced appearance.

This rule doesn’t apply to floor lamps. They are usually more than 1m high, so a 1m diameter shade is out of teh question. For bases like these, we recommend lampshades with a bottom diameter 45-55cm. Of course, if there isn’t enought space, 40cm will also work.
Small hallways and corridors are usually lit with ceilling cylinders: 35-40cm in diameter and 20cm in height. Small bedrooms (10-14m2) look good with cylinders or conical shades around 40-45cm in diameter. In larger rooms we can use 50-60cm shades, while huge spaces are best left to interior designers -we trust their ideas and compositions.
From our experience, children’s rooms are a bit different. There, we usually produce cylinders around 30cm in diameter, and that still works well. The most important thing for them is bright light.
We hope that in short we were able to give you the main tips how to start with this subject. Sometimes, with specific lamps, it can be more complicated. That’s why we never say no to our customers when it comes to ordering samples. We can produce a single sample to find the best solution. 🙂
Good luck
